History of Deming Pavilion
Deming Pavillion was dedicated on Wednesday, November 4, 1998. An excerpt from the dedication speech is below.
Tulane University President, Scott S. Cowen, and then Tulane University Medical Center Chancellor, John C. LaRosa, dedicated the opening of the Bertie M. And John W. Deming Pavilion of the Tulane health sciences campus. Bertie Deming Smith and her late husband, Dr. John W. Deming, are lifetime benefactors of Tulane University and its health sciences campus. Dr. Deming, a native of Evergreen, Alabama, earned his M.D. degree from Tulane School of Medicine in 1944 and won the Isadore Dyer prize for the highest four-year average in his class. His wife, Bertie, a native of Eldorado, Arkansas and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, is a honorary alumnae of Tulane University. Outstanding philanthropists, the Demings have been members of the Paul Tulane Society, Tulane’s most prestigious distinction, since 1983. Together they have provided not only outstanding support but also countless hours of volunteer leadership to both Tulane University and its Medical Center. It is in recognition of their exceptional generosity and leadership that Tulane dedicate the Bertie M. and John W. Deming Pavilion in their honor.
