As part of Tulane’s Residential Curriculum, Housing and Residence Life offers a number of opportunities for residents and faculty to interact in in meaningful ways. By bringing faculty and residents together, residents are empowered to form academic support systems, engage more deeply in their studies, and form lasting relationships with their community. Our faculty-driven programs include:
The Faculty in Residence (FIR) is a full-time faculty member who lives in a residence hall on campus and serves as a positive and visible leader, teacher, and mentor to students living in the residence halls. FIRs facilitate, promote, and encourage intellectual, social, and cultural development, as well as provide assistance to students seeking academic support and guidance through programming, one on one relationship building, and the sharing of academic resources. FIRs work with our Housing and Residence Life staff to provide supportive environments where students can learn and develop.
Dr. Jonathan Fadok (Faculty In Residence, Fogelman Residence Hall)
Jonathan is an Associate Professor in Tulane’s Department of Psychology, a member of the Tulane Brain Institute, and a neuroscientist who investigates how the brain regulates fear, stress, and defensive behaviors. He earned his B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona, his Ph.D. in Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of Washington and completed postdoctoral training at the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel, Switzerland. Jonathan started the Fadok Lab at Tulane in 2017, where he and his team study how brain circuits shape emotions and actions. As Faculty-in-Residence, Dr. Fadok aims to create a welcoming, intellectually curious community at Fogelman Hall by hosting weekly coffee chats focused on thriving in college and monthly events that celebrate the unique environment at Tulane and in New Orleans. Outside the lab he enjoys cooking, exercise, and reading novels. He is also always searching New Orleans for the city’s best food in every category. He also loves spending time with his two sons, Xander (13) and Teddy (10), by exploring their love of baseball (Xander) and aviation (Teddy). He looks forward to helping residents turn curiosity into discovery and making Fogelman a true home away from home.
Dr. Clare Daniels (Faculty In Residence, Wall Residence Hall)
Dr. Clare Daniel is a Senior Professor of Practice and Director of Research at Newcomb Institute. She is originally from Iowa and Minnesota, but came to New Orleans in 2014 after spending 8 years in Albuquerque, New Mexico for graduate school. She holds a doctorate and master's in American Studies from the University of New Mexico and a bachelor's degree from Macalester College in German Studies and English with a Women’s and Gender Studies minor. Her research, teaching, and student program administration focus on reproductive rights, health, and justice. She values deep engagement with New Orleans and Louisiana communities around those issues. As Faculty in Residence, Dr. Daniel aims to serve as an easily accessible source of support and advice for students. She wishes she had taken more advantage of the resources related to study skills and career development that were offered at her undergraduate institution, so she is motivated to help students find what they need while they are here. She enjoys all things related to music: playing, listening, dancing, and going to see it performed around town. She will be joined in Wall by her son, Milo.
Dr. Matt Barrios (Faculty-In-Residence, Weatherhead Residence Hall)
Matt Barrios is a Senior Professor of Practice in the Physics and Engineering Physics Department. Dr. Barrios is from Westwego, LA and holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University and a M.S. and PhD. in Mechanical Engineering from Florida State University. Prof. Barrios worked as a Cryogenic Engineer for Michigan State University’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams and was Cryogenic Operations Supervisor at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory before joining Tulane in 2016. In addition to teaching, Dr. Barrios enjoys advising students on career paths, internships, and research opportunities, participating in activities from recruitment to graduation, and working with students in labs, on projects, and in the Makerspace. As a Faculty in Residence, Dr. Barrios hopes to expand on these activities to help make our student experience a well-rounded, inclusive, and welcoming one. Dr. Barrios enjoys watching and playing sports and attending New Orleans’ many festivals. Dr. Barrios will be joined by his wife, Dr. Maggie Salib-Barrios, Nurse Practitioner and Instructor of Clinical Nursing at LSUHSC, and their son Cameron.
Professor Hannah Berryhill (Faculty-In-Residence, Greenbaum Hall)
Hannah Berryhill is a Professor of Practice in Design in the School of Architecture and Built Environment. She earned her B.S. in Interior Design from the University of Texas at Austin, where she minored in Spanish. She completed her Master of Architecture degree at Tulane in 2018. Prior to working at Tulane, Professor Berryhill worked at several architecture and interior design firms. She continues her work in the field at Colectivo, where she works on both residential and commercial projects ranging from new construction to historic buildings. As Faculty-in-Residence, Professor Berryhill is very excited to help students transform their residential spaces to help support their wellness. Professor Berryhill is joined by her partner, Josh Fulmer, Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs in Campus Recreation at Tulane, and the world's friendliest dog, Oyster.
