Turning the Tide Scholars is an RLC that prepares students to become intercultural leaders who foster harmony, dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving within both academic and residential settings. Residents participate in an immersive living and academic experience that develops foundational skills in intercultural dialogue, curiosity, critical reasoning, and community building. Residents also design and lead the Turning the Tide Summit, a student-run initiative that demonstrates growth in intercultural leadership, community engagement, equity, and social impact, while advancing Tulane’s commitments to belonging, relational culture, and outward-facing engagement.
The Turning the Tide Scholars RLC is open to all first-year students, regardless of race, color, national origin or any other characteristic protected by law.
HRL works in partnership with the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life on the Turning the Tide RLC. If you have questions about the RLC content or programming, please contact Cara Guilbeau (cguilbeau@tulane.edu), Director, Intercultural Life.
Students will engage in weekly dialogue labs and small-group “pods” where they practice compassionate listening, curiosity-driven questioning, and navigating disagreement across differences. Through a community engagement experience, students apply these skills in real-world settings and ultimately facilitate their own conversations and storytelling.
An experiential first-year seminar where students build the skills and confidence to engage across differences through dialogue, reflection, and community-based practice.
The Turning the Tide Scholars RLC location is in Monroe Hall.
The Turning the Tide Scholars RLC application can be found on your Housing Portal when you apply for housing. You must fill out both a Housing Application AND an RLC Application to be considered for the RLC.
