If I hadn’t chosen to be an RA, my experience here at Tulane just wouldn’t have been the same. It has been one of the most challenging and wonderful times of my life. I’ve had the chance to cultivate strong friendships with my fellow RAs (who are some of the best people on campus), to get to know and make a difference in the lives and experiences of my residents, and to have lots of fun while doing it. Among many other things, being an RA has taught me how to successfully juggle multiple things at once, how to plan and implement programs, how to make a sweet bulletin board display, and how to be a better leader and a better team member. Choosing to be an RA was one of the best choices I’ve made at college and I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. You know you want to be an RA…we’re awesome! --Helen Jaksch |

Being a resident advisor has been an interesting experience and it means the world to both my residents and me. What started out as a project to make my resume look better and see what campus life is really like has been, to my surprise, really rewarding. I am twenty six years old making me just a little older than the average RA, and it has placed me into a position of the cool aunt or what some may call a play mom with authority. Working with the students has given me the opportunity to create a successful community environment similar to living at home with your brothers, sisters, cousins, and really cool friends who are over all of the time. It has also allowed the opportunity to promote diversity awareness within the students, to help them know that everyone is not going to be as popular or fun loving as you are but they are people too and you can learn a lot from these individuals – part of the Momma T’s No Resident Left Without Friends Plan. Being an RA also gives you the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of these students in a time when they are away from their families, when they need guidance, and need someone to talk to. The greatest feeling ever is to know that you have helped them and that they will never forget it.

Working as an RA for the past two years has been an amazing experience. Being an RA gave me a lot of new leadership experience and led me to meet so many interesting people - Tulane administration, staff, residents and, fellow HRL staff members. It's a good chance to get residents involved and make a difference in the on-campus community. Being an RA isn't just about discipline at all - I feel that it's about creating a positive and comfortable social living environment. My RA led me to want to become one, and he's now one of my best friends.

I absolutely love being an RA. I have been an RA for a semester, but I am already deciding to be an RA for the rest of my time at college. I know that if I wasn’t an RA I would not have become so involved with such great people and be a leader to so many more. Being an RA has taught me so much, and I am psyched to learn more.

Working for Housing and Residence Life has given me far more than just an employment opportunity. I have been able to gain valuable leadership skills within a community that fosters an atmosphere of personal growth and the promotion of cooperation and development. I have been able to participate in the larger Tulane community at an intimate level, and see from a distinct perspective all that the University has to offer. I have had the chance to meet a variety of people, learn so much about the world around me, and cultivate the friendships that have meant the most to me in my four years at Tulane. In sum, working as a Resident Advisor is something that has colored my college years with a valuable sense of community, great memories, and the skills for a successful future.

The job of being an RA has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences of my undergraduate career. There are pressures at times to being a role model for the freshmen residents in my building, but most times, it is fun. By encouraging school involvement, programming, and assisting in their transition to college life, I have helped enrich my residents’ college experiences, while enhancing my college experience as well. In return, I have become more active on campus, a successful programmer, and more well rounded person. The things I have learned as an RA will be with me forever.

Working in Housing and Residence Life has absolutely been a great addition to my undergraduate experience here at Tulane. Not only has it allowed me to get very involved within the university, it has taught me a great deal about leadership and working with others. I have become best friends with other staff members…you really are like a small family in each residence hall. Knowing that you have 30 college freshmen looking up to you as a role model and as an example of what to look forward to in the next years of college is an awesome feeling. I encourage everyone who is interested to apply - as being a Resident Advisor is the ultimate way to obtain the 'college experience'.
