Resident Advisor
The Student Services Coordinator serves as a member of the Housing Services Team in the overall operation of Housing Services. The Student Services Coordinator (SSC) assists the Department of Housing and Residence Life with the coordination and implementation of key events and services. The SSC also assists the Housing Services Team with the assignments process and communications for new, returning, and transfer students. This is a year-long position designed to begin April 1 and continue through the end of the following academic year including the summer months.

Qualifications Responsibilities Terms
 

  1. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. PROGRAM COORDINATION (40%):
      1. Assist with the implementation and management of the following programs and services:
        - Mardi Gras Guest Administration (recruit, train, and schedule staff).
        - Housing Expo (Market Expo and create programs/sessions on assignments).
        - Van Certification Program (assist with and/or certify staff as needed).
        - Closing and Opening (coordinate closing files and respond to inquiries).
      2. Attend weekly supervision meeting with the Director of Housing Services or Coordinator of Housing Services.
      3. Attend all related team meetings.
      4. Assist in creation and publication of marketing materials for related programs and services. Assist with training of staff members as appropriate during fall and winter training and as new staff members are hired.
      5. Assist with coordinating all year-end closing procedures including requests to stay beyond closing, room condition reports, and associated damage billing.

    2. ASSIGNMENTS AND SERVICES ASSISTANCE (40%):
      1. Assist with the assignments processes for new, transfer, and returning students including the following tasks:
        - Application processing and assignments data entry.
        - Forms processing and maintenance for leaves of absence and cancellations.
      2. Communicate with new, transfer, and returning students via phone, email, and mailings as directed by and on behalf of professional staff.
      3. Assist with management of “sensitive” or “crisis” situations including understanding roster management and facilities-related policies.
      4. Assist with conducting room and facility assessments during summer terms with assistance from summer staff members.
      5. Maintain student files in conjunction with assignments forms, closing information, and auditing file room.

    3. ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT (20%):
      1. Schedule, publish, and maintain 12 to 15 hours in office per week during the academic year to provide direct support for Housing Services staff.
      2. Assist housing services staff with other programs and services as requested.
      3. Communicate with other staff members and students via website updates, Blackboard updates, and email as requested.

  2. QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Minimum of one “term” of positively-evaluated experience as a student staff member in the Department of Housing and Residence Life or the Division of Student Affairs including but not limited to Resident Advisor, Orientation Coordinator, Desk Service Coordinator, Student Worker at Tulane University; sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate academic status by the start of the year following selection. Please note: we may consider accepting applications from other students with credible technology-related experiences at Tulane University. All things being equal, preference may be given to current department staff.
    2. Current full-time undergraduate or graduate student with overall minimum 2.50 GPA (for undergraduate students) at the time of employment and throughout the period of employment; graduate students must maintain good academic standing with their college.
    3. High level of maturity with demonstrated exceptional administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    4. Significant communication and marketing skills.
    5. Strong sense of team-driven projects and objectives.
    6. Ability to work well under pressure, especially during peak seasons for the department.
    7. High level of understanding of technology including PC skills, Microsoft Office suite skills, desktop publishing skills.

  3. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
    1. PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: The period of employment extends for approximately thirteen months beginning April 1 and terminating at the end of the following academic year. The Student Services Coordinator must either be available for employment for the entire summer or a significant portion thereof. The summer months, while negotiable, are a critical time for assignments and preparation of our Department and Division for new students. Preference will be given to those who can commit to the entire time requested.
    2. REMUNERATION: Academic-Year Remuneration (August 15th est. – May): a $2600 stipend paid in biweekly increments; housing provided is valued at $2500 per semester and will be in the form of a single room or a bedroom within an Aron Apartment. A meal plan, equivalent to that received by Resident Advisors, is also provided.
      Summer Employment Remuneration (April 1st – August 15th) in the form of an hourly wage and housing provided at a value of $2500. Total compensation for summer employment is equivalent to at least $13 per hour. Average work week is 30 to 40 hours per week during normal business hours. We cannot guarantee a particular hall or room type given the varying construction and renovation schedules each year. There is no meal plan provided during summer months.
    3. CONTINUATION OF EMPLOYMENT: Continuation of employment is dependant on successful completion of all tasks, positive evaluation by the Housing Services Team, and continued exhibition of growth and enthusiasm for the position.
    4. COMMITMENT: The Student Services Coordinator position must be the primary non-academic commitment. If an extracurricular activity or other job is interfering with the staff member’s ability to perform his or her duties to the standards set by the Housing Services Team, the Student Services Coordinator will be asked to make immediate necessary changes to come back into acceptable standards or to end his or her outside position.
