Resident Advisor
Senior Resident Advisors serve as a member of the Area Management Team in the overall operations and management of the residential area. They also assist the Area Director or Student Affairs Associate in community development and administration of all activities and programs, behavioral and judicial issues, and they respond to emergencies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. MANAGEMENT

As a key member of the area management team, the Senior Resident Advisor aides the Area Director or Student Affairs Associate in the management functions of the area. This is a position with supervisory responsibility.

1. Assume responsibility for the hall/area in the absence of the AD and/or SAA.


2. Respond to emergency situations and provide necessary follow-up.


3. Attend weekly supervision meeting with the AD or SAA.


4. Attend all quad management team and halls staff meetings.


5. Support and maintain all university and departmental standards and regulations consistently and fairly.


6. Assist with selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of the Resident Advisors.


7. Assist in developing hall and front desk procedures and goals.


8. Assist AD or SAA in the formulation of staff development activities for the Resident Advisor and Desk Service Coordinator staff. Attend all staff development activities.


9. Inform residents of services available at the desk, procedures, and policies.

B. ADMINISTRATION

The SRA shares in the completion of administrative tasks with the management team. The SRA is expected to maintain appropriate records for the successful administration of the area. Attention to administrative detail is essential to the completion of many Housing and Resident Life functions.

1. Manage the staff office by monitoring and replacing supplies and forms, supervising equipment check-outs procedures, and maintaining appropriate cleanliness of the office.


2. Assist the AD and SAA in opening and closing the hall(s) and in the day-to-day operations for the hall(s) throughout the year (inclusive of break periods).


3. Develop, maintain, and address Resident Advisor (RA) staff duty concerns.


4. Monitor staff duty log and bring any concerns to the AD’s attention.


5. Communicate weekly, or as needed, with the AD and SAA regarding all area happenings and concerns.


6. Review all RA program planning forms and offer guidance and feedback to the staff.


7. Maintain accurate log of programs completed by the RA staff.


8. Conduct building walk-throughs twice a month to evaluate the condition of RA bulletin boards, publicity, and programming materials.


9. Coordinate RA weekend off and duty schedules.


10. Maintain building’s/ buildings’ central bulletin boards.


11. Respond to inquiries by students, parents and Tulane employees.

C. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The SRA leads the area team in community development efforts. Key functions within this role include: supervision of programming efforts, assistance in the establishment and enforcement of Community Living Standards, and assistance with staff development efforts.

1. Serve as a role model to RA staff and to residents by supporting and living within the guidelines established by Tulane University and Housing and Residence Life whether in the hall, on campus, or in an off-campus social setting, and by following the appropriate channels of communication.


2. Ensure that RA and DSC staff members are performing to the appropriate levels.


3. Serve as a resource person to the RA in program planning.


4. Coordinate building/ area wide programs and events.


5. Develop professional working relationships with the RA and Desk Service Coordinators. Communicate any staff and resident concerns to the AD and SAA.


6. Attend at least two RA programs a week (if applicable).


7. Coordinate staff development and in-service training activities with the AD or SAA.


8. Assist the AD or SAA in training the staff on residence life policies and procedures.


9. Ensure that each RA is maintaining and being consistent with community standards.


10. Educate RA on judicial consequences of alcohol and drug violations.


11. Assist RAs in knowing the rationales behind policy infractions.


12. Ensure that each RA is intervening in conflict resolutions and behavioral issues with the understanding of the resources that are available.

D. DEPARTMENTAL:

1. Attend appropriate meetings with the central office staff.

2. Work with special projects coordinates through the central office.

QUALIFICATIONS

     

A. Minimum of two semesters of positively evaluated experience as an RA or as a Desk Service Coordinator at Tulane University – junior, senior, or graduate academic status. Please note: All things being equal, candidates who are currently employed will be given preference.


B. Current, full-time undergraduate or graduate student with overall minimum 2.50 GPA (for undergrad students) at the time of employment and throughout the period of employment. Graduate students must maintain good academic standing with their college.


C. High level of maturity with demonstrated exceptional administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

A. Period of employment extends for approximately nine months beginning one week prior to the RA Fall Workshop and ending after all tasks have been completed following the closing of the halls (generally 24 to 48 hours after the last halls officially close). SRAs will be expected to provide staff supervision when halls remain open for Thanksgiving, Spring Break, and semester breaks. SRAs are also expected to be available during Mardi Gras. Continuation of employment is dependant upon successful completion of all tasks, positive evaluation by the AD and/or SAA, and continued exhibition of growth and enthusiasm for the position.


B. Remuneration in the form of a furnished private room with bath facilities valued at approximately $5,500 per year, a $2600.00 stipend paid in bi-weekly increments and $500 meal plan stipend per semester (breakdown: 25 meals with remaining money to be applied to greenbucks).


C. Time off in the form of one weekend per month is encouraged, with the time arranged in advance with the AD or SAA and the SRA to ensure proper coverage. Weekends off are defined as extending from Friday noon to Sunday 10:00pm.


D. As it is the nature of this position to be an emergency response person, each SRA is expected to sleep in their building unless they are taking an official weekend off. Both the SRA and the AD or SAA may not be out of the building overnight at the same time.


E. The SRA position must be the primary non-academic commitment. If an extracurricular activity or other job is interfering with the SRA’s ability to perform his or her duties to the standards set by the AD and/or SAA, the SRA will be asked to make immediate necessary changes to come back into acceptable standards or to end his or her outside position.
