Frequently Asked Questions

1. May I have another job while I am a senior staff member?
Your HSC position is considered your primary non-academic commitment. While being a senior staff member does not prohibit you from holding another job, any additional employment must be approved by your Area Director. Also, please keep in mind that becoming a senior staff member is a major commitment and the duties, responsibilities, and time commitment associated with a senior staff position surpass the commitments of RAs.

2. I am an RA who is interested in becoming a senior staff member, and I am thinking about going abroad. Can I apply so that when I return to Tulane, I would hold a senior staff position?
Yes, Housing and Residence Life supports Tulane’s emphasis on global learning through study abroad. Your intention to return as an RA should be addressed prior to your departure, and you are responsible for submitting the electronic application by the deadline. Upon your return to the University, you will be considered an RA alternate and placed according to the departmental needs. Placement upon return is not guaranteed.

3. I currently live off campus. Can I apply to be a senior staff member?
Yes, provided that you have worked as an RA or DSC for at least two semesters.

4. If I’m offered placement as an senior staff member in a certain residence hall and don’t accept it, am I eligible for senior staff positions in another residence hall on campus?
No, the initial placement offer is considered to be a final offer. If you do not accept the position, you will no longer be eligible for other senior staff positions.

5. Are graduate students eligible to apply for senior staff positions?
Yes, graduate students are eligible to apply for senior staff positions, provided that they have been an RA or a DSC for at least two semesters.

6. Can juniors be senior staff members?

Yes, the minimum experience requirement is two semesters as either a DSC or an SRA.
