Resident Advisor

ResponsibilitiesQualifications
 

  1. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
    1. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (25%):
      1. Supervise full-time interns, graduate hall directors,
        and paraprofessional student staff members.
      2. Conduct formal evaluations in the fall and spring semesters, and engage in ongoing informal evaluations with all staff.
      3. Oversee implementation of resident developed programming and individual contact models in the residence halls.
      4. Support campus-wide programming initiatives.
      5. Support the university’s Residential College initiatives.
      6. Promote leadership development, self-governance opportunities, as well as civic engagement through resident involvement.
      7. Provide a high level of visibility and availability to students, while serving as a role model for students and staff.
      8. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

        1. Conduct weekly staff and management team meetings.
        2. Submit weekly reports to the Director of Residence Life including any issues related to staffing.
        3. Collect weekly individual contact reports from each resident advisor directly or indirectly supervised.
        4. Maintain an area programming database to track resident developed programming.
        5. Advise Residence Hall Governments in each area including the community leadership councils.
        6. Submit formal fall and spring evaluations for each staff member supervised.
        7. Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with the Director of Residence Life.
        8. Attend weekly departmental staff meetings.

    1. HOUSING SERVICES(25%):
      1. Provide a coordinated delivery of services and resources via the residential area service desk.
      2. Project a positive student service attitude with particular attention to engaging students in problem solving.
      3. Communicate Housing Services, Facilities Services, and other Service-related department policies and procedures to campus residents.
      4. Properly maintain and staff a residential area service desk.
      5. Coordinate opening and closing processes for a residential area including maintaining accurate inventories and condition reports of facilities, furniture, and equipment.
      6. Complete occupancy reports of residential areas.
      7. Administer community standards and residence hall policies as they relate to housing services.
      8. Coordinate assessment and benchmarking activities for residential area in conjunction with department goals and objectives.

      9. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
        1. Maintain accurate occupancy information, including up to date rosters.
        2. Process billing for related services or facilities charges as needed.
        3. Process vandalism charges on a community or individual basis as appropriate.
        4. Ensure that Room Condition Reports have been filed for each student in the residential area.
        5. Follow up with the Director of Housing Services to ensure that facilities, furniture, and equipment concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
        6. Select, train, and evaluate work-study students to serve as Desk Service Coordinators.
        7. Process bi-weekly payroll for Desk Service Coordinators.
        8. Conduct inventories of all keys, common areas, and equipment at the beginning and end of each semester.
    1. GENERAL MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION (15%):
      1. Maintain daily office hours.
      2. Investigate thoroughly and respond promptly and professionally to all complaints of students, parents, Tulane University administrators and others to provide accurate information and foster positive public relations.
      3. Serve on departmental and university wide committees as requested.
      4. Assume responsibility for collateral or special assignments within the department or division.
      5. Assist with departmental strategic planning and development.

      6. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
        1. Respond to all calls and e-mail messages within 24 hours.
        2. Log all calls and record responses appropriately.
        3. Serve on at least one university/division-wide committee.
        4. Coordinate processes as dictated by collateral assignments.
        5. Attend professional development opportunities as able.


    1. CRISIS MANAGEMENT (15%):
      1. Serve in a campus wide emergency response rotation and as part of the emergency management team for the university.
      2. Serve as an essential personnel during emergency operations, including participation in and implementation of university responses to hurricanes and other emergency situations.
      3. Respond promptly and appropriately to security, behavioral, and counseling situations.
      4. Ensure that crisis response records are maintained confidentially in the central office.

        PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
        1. Serve as the on-call person for the university every eighth week (24/7), and handle emergencies and crises.
        2. Promote emergency response planning and education within residential community and ensure preparedness plans are completed according to university guidelines.
        3. Maintain a log of all calls received during the on-call time.
        4. Process referrals to the Educational Resource and Counseling Center, the Office of Alcohol Initiatives, or the Student Health Center as necessary and within 72 hours of precipitating incident(s).
        5. Attend monthly Students At Risk Meetings.
        6. Maintain student files centrally, including records of crisis response.
        7. Contribute to on-going assessments of the university and departmental crisis response process.

    1. JUDICIAL AND BEHAVIORAL DUTIES(10%):
      1. Support and administer all university, and departmental policies, regulations, and conduct standards.
      2. Serve as a university judicial officer.
      3. Promote the development and responsibility of individuals and communities using student development theories.
      4. Encourage students to use the mediation process to solve interpersonal disputes.

      5. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
        1. Collect and review area incident reports and turn in within 24 hours of the date of the incident to the Director of Residence Life.
        2. Process referrals to the Educational Resource and Counseling Center, the Office of Alcohol Initiatives, or the Student Health Center as necessary and within 72 hours of precipitating incident(s).
        3. Ensure that all first year students have completed roommate contracts by the 6th week of the semester.
        4. Provide the Judicial Coordinator with ten hours per week for judicial hearings.
        5. Use resident advisors’ individual contact reports and one on one meetings to identify students who may be at risk.
        6. Maintain student files centrally, including records of judicial processes.
        7. Contribute to on-going assessments of the university judicial code.

    1. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (5%):
      1. Oversee residential area budget, allocating funds to area programs, quad-wide events, staff expenses and other purchases.
      2. Maintain accurate financial records for area budget.

      3. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
        1. Turn in monthly purchase card logs and review transactions according to schedule.
        2. Turn in monthly budget reconciliation statements.

    1. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (5%):
      1. Perform other duties as required or requested whether or not specifically listed on this job description.

      2. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
        1. Exhibit a willingness to learn new tasks.
        2. Seek the assistance of supervisor prior to beginning an unfamiliar assignment.

  • QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field
    2. Two years residence life experience preferred
    3. Previous supervisory, advisory, programming, and judicial experience
    4. Ability to apply student development theory in daily practice
    5. Demonstrated commitment to personal and departmental development, professionalism, multi-cultural education, creativity, collaboration, and initiative
    6. Sense of humor strongly encouraged
