Emergency: Fire
Being Prepared Hurricanes & Tropical Storms Facilities & Utilities Personal Health & Safety Fire Bomb & Terror Threats

In the event of a fire:
Remain calm. Sound the fire alarm immediately. If the alarm fails to operate, warn other residents by knocking on doors and shouting warnings. Call the Department of Public Safety at (504) 865-5200 or x5200 from any campus phone and give as much information as possible to the dispatcher. Do not assume that someone else has already notified TUPD.

If you hear a fire alarm:
Evacuate the building immediately. Though a fire alarm may indicate a drill, excessive smoke, or a fire, assume every alarm is a fire. Failure to evacuate when a fire alarm sounds may result in disciplinary action, possible criminal prosecution, and/or fines. When evacuating, take your key and University ID and proceed to the nearest exit. Do not use an elevator. Stand at least fifty feet away from the building and remain clear of all entrance and exit doors. A staff member will notify residents when it is safe to return to the building. Do not reenter the building for any reason until the proper University official has declared it safe.
