Named for Pierce Butler, a former
Newcomb College professor and dean, Butler House welcomes its fourteenth
incoming class of Honors residents in the fall of 2007. The eight-story,
coed structure consists of double-occupancy rooms for the first-year
student and a few Honors upperclass singles.
Symmetric rooms contain extra-long
twin beds. Chests of drawers are built into a study desk that runs
the width of the room under the picture window. Ample wardrobe space
on either side of the room, with storage space above each closet
is also provided. Butler features convenient study lounges, two
kitchens, and three laundry rooms.
Theme Residence: Honors
As Tulane's Honors Residence, Butler House offers its residents a unique combination of atmosphere and involvement.

Residents and staff
work hard to maintain an environment conducive to learning. Building-wide
study groups, seven in-hall study lounges, and day-to-day interaction
with other serious students provide an excellent academic and social
support network for our residents. In addition to the student-staff
themselves, first-year residents can draw on the experiences of
several Honors upperclass students who live in the building, and
of others who are invited for special events. Faculty interaction
through one-time activities and the honors office and Dean make
campus faculty available and approachable outside the classroom.
Honors residents don't just concentrate on
their books. They tend to be some of the more involved students
on campus, regularly taking leadership roles and positions throughout
the University, winning intramural sports titles, and leading school
spirit. Hall staff also work with students to identify study abroad,
graduate school, career, and other personal development interests,
and to connect them with helpful campus and community resources.
Taken together, these qualities of residents and community create
an enjoyable, well-rounded, living-learning experience. First priority
for spaces in the Honors Residence is for students with high school
or college academic performance that qualifies them for the University
Honors Program (504/865-5517).
