Packing to go to college is difficult. What should stay at home and what will be needed at Tulane? Keep in mind that you will be sharing a room with someone else who will also be bringing his or her belongings. One stereo between you should be enough. Things such as area rugs, curtains, fridge, etc. should be obtained after a discussion with your roommate. This will be a good way to get to know the other person and also avoid picking something that your roommate doesn’t like.
Some Ideas:
• Linens: twin sheets (all first -year halls have extra-long twin mattresses,
except Sharp, which has regular twin mattress), a light blanket and
pillow
• Towels
• Toiletries and something to carry them
• Shower sandals
• Computer: access to the campus network is available in every room (one
access point per resident)
• Rain gear: umbrella and poncho
• Telephone: there is one modular jack per room
• Answering machine: a campus voice mailbox is also available (note
that both cannot work simultaneously)
• Trash can
• Extra outlets (surge protectors)
• Cat-5 (ethernet) cable
• Hot pot or coffee maker
• Camera and film
• Clothes hangers
• Alarm clock
• Study lamp: no halogen
• Iron: with auto shut-off
• Laundry detergent
• Laundry bag
• Quarters (for laundry or you may also use your Tulane Card)
• Can opener
• Paper plates and plastic utensils
• Yaffa blocks / small shelves
• Flashlight with batteries
• Bicycle: bring a heavy-duty lock and register your bike with Tulane
Police when you arrive (it's a city law!)
• Stereo and television: coordinate with your roommate
• Room decor: You may add simple furnishings, curtains, and posters
to your room, but you may not remove furniture, paint your room or alter
it in any way.
• Musical instruments: there are many opportunities to express your
musical creativity at Tulane; however, we request that you don't play
amplified instruments or drums in the residence halls. If you do, you'll
be asked to ship them home.
