Residency Requirement for First & Second Year Students
Living on-campus at Tulane University is a fundamental part of the educational experience. In 2005, Tulane Universiy implemented it's Renewal Plan expanding the residency requirement to cover student's first- and second-years.
All undergraduate students must reside in the residence halls on campus during their first and second years (freshman and sophomore years). Class year is based on total academic years in college, not on credit hours earned. This policy applies to all students enrolling at Tulane as a first-time, first-year student during the fall semester. This policy does not apply to transfer students regardless of date of enrollment or class standing.
To meet the housing needs of our first and second year students, Housing and Residence Life offers a variety of housing assignments options. Should you have special housing need, please refer to this page for more information. Requests for special housing needs must be submitted by February 1 (continuing/returning students) or May 1 in order to receive appropriate consideration.
The following three categories are approved exceptions to the Residency Requirement. However, the student must submit a Residency Exemption Form and provide verification of one of the following by June 30 (new, incoming students) or March 20 (continuing/returning students):
(1) Local residency with a parent or legal guardian* (see below for details)
(2) Above 21 years of age
(3) Legally married by June 30
To be approved for one of the above categories, please submit the Residency Exemption Form and appropriate materials, in writing or via fax to:
Gwen Buras, Administrative Assistant
27 McAlister Drive, Irby House - Tulane University
New Orleans, LA 70118
Fax: (504) 862-8944
We are unable to accept documentation via email.
For students continuing from their first year through the second academic year, The Associate Vice President for Housing and Residence Life (AVP-HRL) retains the right to grant additional exceptions. To be considered for an exception that falls outside of the approved categories (listed above), a continuing student must meet with the Associate Vice President for Housing and Residence Life prior to March 18 (during the spring semester of their first-year). To contact the AVP-HRL, please contact the Housing and Residence Life office at (504) 865-5724 or e-mail housing@tulane.edu
* For local freshmen and sophomores who prefer to live at home or with a parent or legal guardian, the following items must be submitted by June 30 (new, incoming students) or March 18 (continuing/returning students):
(1) Letter of consent from the parent or guardian verifying your residency with them for the following academic year
(2) Verification of local address as primary residence of the parent or guardian
How To Verify Local Address as Primary Residence of Parent or Guardian:
(1) Current utility bill with parent or guardian name included, along with matching drivers license (copies only, please delete or "black out" the social security info)
(2) Current lease or rental agreement along with matching drivers license or matching utility bills
Note: Living in a parent or guardian's secondary or non-primary residence (such as a rental unit) does not constitute living with a parent or guardian in his or her primary residence.
