>>>Housing Priorities for Returning Undergraduates<<<
Housing Priorities for Returning Undergraduates
Housing assignments for current undergraduates returning to Tulane University for 2008-09 are based on a student’s class standing (by year, not academic credits) and University Housing priorities. These factors provide each class a first priority for a particular type of accommodation. Priorities for the 2008-09 academic year are as follows:
Rising 2nd Year Students (current freshman), as a component of the Renewal Plan, will be required to live on-campus during their second/sophomore year and are guaranteed housing on-campus. Rising 2nd year students have priority for Warren House, Irby & Phelps Houses, Mayer Residences* as well as designated upper-class areas in Monroe Hall, Butler Honors House, Josephine Louise House and Paterson Wellness Community and designated double occupancy rooms in Willow Residences. In addition, current residents in Wall Residential College have the opportunity to return next year through a special process. *Mayer Residences is home to the T2 Sophomore Year Experience program.

Rising 3rd Year Students (current sophomores) have priority for designed single and double-occupancy rooms in Willow Residences and are also eligible to live in Aron Apartments and Modular Housing. Rising 3rd year students also have priority for the Leadership Village through a special housing application process. Leadership Village information is available online at http://housing.tulane.edu and applications to this special community are due February 29, 2008.
Willow Residences
Aron Apartments
Modular Housing
Rising 4th & 5th Year Students (current juniors and seniors) have priority for Aron Residences and Modular Housing and are also eligible to live in designated single and double-occupancy rooms in Willow Residences. In addition, Rising 4th year students may apply to the Leadership Village. This application is due February 29, 2008. Current residents in Aron Apartments may elect to retain the apartment provided they are able to fill the apartment with rising 3rd, 4th or 5th year students
Aron Apartments
Modular Housing
Willow Residences
Graduate Students (including 4+1 graduate students) must reside in graduate specific housing. Graduate housing accommodates graduate program’s academic calendar (i.e. earlier starting dates than undergraduate calendars). Graduate students are eligible to reside in The Papillon Apartments in the lower garden district and Deming Pavilion located on the Health Sciences campus, downtown. The application process is separate from the undergraduate timeline. More information will be online in April 2008. Please monitor our website at http://housing.tulane.edu
Based on the priorities above, students will need to complete two steps to secure housing assignments for next year.
Step 1 – Application due by Friday, March 14, 2008 *
*Those retaining an Aron apartment must submit their materials and retain form by Friday, March 7, 2008
*Applicants to the T2 or Leadership Village should submit materials by Friday, February 29, 2007
*Current First Year (Rising 2nd Year) students do NOT have to submit an application based on the two-year residency requirement (more information provided below).
Step 2 – Online Room Selection will occur over the course of two weeks following Spring Break.
Details of the online system and process will be available closer to this time. Please be patient as we finalize the system and prepare detailed instructions on this process.
>>>>>GENERAL INFORMATION<<<<<
Room Selection Process
For students participating in this general assignments process (excluding Leadership Village and Wall Residential College and Butler Honors House), room selection will occur online through the HousingWeb system. The online system will provide a random, lottery based process. Date of application will have NO bearing on the randomly generated lottery system. The system will be time-based, similar to the academic class registration process and provide an applicant with a window of time in which to select a residence hall room and select roommates and suitemates. If you are unable to be online to select your room at that time, you are welcome to choose a proxy or friend to select for you but will have to provide them with your login information in order for them to do so. Login information and access will be distributed prior to selection period. If you fail to select a room at your established time you will be unable to do so until later in the process. Exact parameters of how this will occur are not available at this time.
Roommates & Suitemates
Students will be able to “pull in” roommates and suitemates through the online system. You will need to have their information in order to do so, but those details and specific data required will be communicated prior to room selection. You will only be able to pull in roommates and suitemates of the same gender AND same eligibility and who applied on time. In other words, a rising senior who selects an Aron Apartment may not pull in a rising sophomore. In this case, they can only select from other rising seniors or rising juniors.
Class Standing
Class standing is based on tenure in college. We obtain your class standing from Registrar’s data from the fall semester. We are aware many students enter with AP credits that may result in first-year students obtaining sophomore status at mid-year. Those do not count toward our policies. We are also aware that some second year or third-year students may not have reached sophomore or junior academic standing by the fall term. If you are unsure of your status, please e-mail applyhrl@tulane.edu with your name, RMS ID#, and request a class standing review. This must be completed prior to the housing assignments phase. This phase starts on the Tuesday following Spring Break.
Cancellation Penalty Information
Any cancellation received AFTER March 14, 2008 will forfeit the $150 housing commitment paid upon entry to Tulane. Cancellations must be received in writing (via the Cancellation Form) to the Housing Office. Students who receive a housing assignment during room selection will have 48 hours to cancel the assignment without additional penalty beyond the forfeited deposit. Cancellations received after the 48-hour window but before May 1 will forfeit their $150 housing commitment deposit and be charged a $300 cancellation fee. The additional charge will be submitted to Accounts Receivable. Cancellations received after May 1 will result in forfeiture of the $150 housing commitment charge and face a penalty equivalent to 50% (one-half) of a semester’s rent. Students who elect to transfer after May 1 will only forfeit the $150 housing deposit provided proof of enrollment elsewhere can be provided and verified. If such verification is not available, then the penalty will remain equivalent to ½ (50%) of a semester’s rent and forfeiture of the $150 housing commitment deposit.

Medical Requests
Students with medically-based requests must be registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS). Only official recommendation letters from ODS are accepted for medical requests and must be received by Housing by the application deadline. Please contact them at (504) 862-8433 or online at http://erc.tulane.edu.
Waitlist Information
We are only able to guarantee housing to first- and second-year students. That said, the past two academic years, we have had ample housing available for all eligible students who apply on-time. We believe that we will be able to accommodate all returning students interested in residing on-campus but are fully capable of addressing any waitlist should they occur.
Leave of Absence
Students going abroad for the Junior Year or taking an official Leave of Absence must complete a Leave of Absence form within our office. These official absences will allow students to participate in the returning student assignments process without being here at Tulane. Please submit the Leave of Absence form found on the Contracts & Forms page of our website. It is important that you continue to monitor the Housing website (http://housing.tulane.edu) for the duration of time that you are on official Leave of Absence.
Proxy Information
If you are unable to select your room online, you must provide your login information to your requested roommate or suitemate and/or a person of your choice who can login for you at the time of your selection.
Room Rental Rates
2008-2009 Rental Rates are posted on the Housing website at http://housing.tulane.edu
Residency Requirement
All undergraduate students admitted through the Office of Admissions (excluding Continuing Studies) must reside in the residence halls on campus during their first and second years (freshman and sophomore years). The only exceptions to this policy are the following: (1) student is above the age of 21 at the time of enrollment, (2) legally married by the residence hall move-in date, or (3) a local resident living with their legal parent or guardian. More information can be found online here: http://housing.tulane.edu/arrive/Local.html
Communication Disclaimer
We use email as our exclusive form of communication with returning residents. When applying, you must provide your @tulane.edu email address or verify it is accurate. We are not responsible for lack of communication if you provide invalid accounts. Should you mainly use another account, please have your @tulane.edu address forwarded.
